Owning a business basically gives you two choices: maintain a consistent business model and adapt your life to fit, or create a flexible business that grows and evolves as you do. This summer has been a lot of learning experiences, from how much is realistic to take on myself, to the kind of work that brings me joy, to the wealth of options available for this little sweets operation. Looking at 2019, I already know there will be some big changes for Gathered. While I love what I do, there's been a consistent nagging feeling that my purpose is to do more good, to impact more lives and create more joy than feels possible with my current setup: both in my own life and those I serve.
I have a huge project just in the beginning stages of existence. It's not real enough to talk about yet, but getting to that point means making more room in my life for a new endeavor, and that means cutting back on some areas that I also love.
Decisions are hard.
While I can't tell you what I'm planning yet, I can tell you what it means for Gathered beyond this winter:
-more Saturday farmers markets. These days have quickly become my favorites of the summer, and next year I'll be there more consistently, with an even better spread. I love holding this space in the community, connecting with farmers and foodies and finding spontaneous creative outlets. This is going to be the main, reliable place to get some Gathered for yourself, and I'll try to be there nearly every week.
-fewer weddings. Like WAY fewer. This was the difficult decision to make, because I have so. much. fun. with your weddings. But they can also take an insane amount of time and energy.
So for 2019 I have decided to do only one or two weddings per month. At this frequency, I'll be able to design some events that are truly exceptional and give my couples the attention they deserve. It also means that availability will be super limited. I want to work with couples that are a perfect fit for Gathered, couples that fall in love with the story behind their meals, that feel the depths of life and love and know that all the little choices we make every day can add up to meaningful impact.
